Peace by Piece: The Norwalk Community Quilt Project was conceived in 2007 as a way to enhance the lives of young people and elders in the city of Norwalk by bringing them together in a common endeavor. The idea of a quilting project was proposed to the Norwalk Children's Foundation by Lizzy Rockwell, a local illustrator and art teacher from the Norwalk AfterSchool Alliance, who had grown up making quilts with her mother, sister, and neighborhood friends as a teenager. The NCF has developed a series of intergenerational community projects that sew seeds of goodness to improve the prospects of young people growing up in Norwalk. The NCF immediately grasped the merits of quilt making, as it offers unique social benefits in the form of team-work, artistic expression, stress reduction, skill development, and friendship.
Quilts require many hands in their production. To date Peace by Piece has completed several full sized quilts, and many smaller quilted objects. Our quilts are designed and crafted by the members of Peace by Piece. They are pieced by machine from many small geometric patches of fabric, and hand quilted on a frame with thousands of tiny stitches. Each finished quilt is a metaphor for the community that produced it, showing that good things happen when many come together as one.
Peace by Piece members meet most Monday and Friday afternoons between 3 - 6 PM at the Quilt House, located in the community room at Senior Court Housing Complex, 9 Union Avenue, Norwalk, CT 08651. Work space is generously provided by the Norwalk Housing Authority.
